Maria is a bilingual writer who was born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, and currently resides in the state of Washington and the state of California. She writes novels, short stories and children’s books. Her third novel "La Casa de los Secretos" will be published by Planeta in July, 2016. Set on two fascinating historical moments, the US invasion of México and the Mexican Revolution, “La Casa de los Secretos” is a novel full of passion, ambition and mystery, which immerses us in the most exquisite and exotic traditions of Oaxaca, with its unmistakable smell of chocolate and the sweet taste of its traditional dishes. The novel will be available in July.
Maria's first novel "Los Hijos del Mar" (Ediciones B, 2006) was also a historical novel. The story, set in late nineteenth-century Mexico and Spain, is based on the lives of the Victorias, who made a name for themselves in Mexico’s pharmaceutical industry, and the story of the Muguiras, Spanish immigrants who found success cultivating and trading coffee seeds. The novel weaves both families’ sagas into a shared destiny, and their intertwined tales become, finally, the love story of Maria's parents. Click here to read a chapter of Los Hijos del Mar.
Maria’s second novel, "Más allá de la justicia" is a contemporary novel narrated by three, female characters - a mexican attorney, an arminian detective and an african-american secretary, all solving legal cases at the public defender's office in Seattle. With this novel she brings us into the harsh world of the US criminal justice system, the complex lives of the accused, and the people who work, relentlessly, in the pursuit of justice.
